Beating Stress

Failure to manage stress can lengthen your job search as it shortens your life. Here are ways to reduce stress and increase your ability to concentrate on finding the perfect job.

Think and talk positively. What you say often determines how you act. Spend an hour really listening to what you say and how you say it. When a negative word comes out of your mouth, immediately cancel it with a positive one.

Take a deep breath. Hold it for ten seconds. Let it rush out. Relax.

Think of the funniest movie you've ever seen. Now, go rent it.

Get enough sleep. When your body is deprived of sleep, you are more susceptible to stress and less able to concentrate.

Eat right. Eat balanced meals that are high in fiber and low in fat. Remember: Food is fuel. You wouldn't put garbage in your car and then expect to drive it across country, would you? Don't fill your body with garbage and then expect to find the right job.

Schedule ten minutes of quiet time every day. Sit in a dark, quiet room and let your mind wander.

Exercise regularly. Twenty minutes a day, three days a week is all it takes to boost energy and reduce stress.

Go to the library and take out a novel you've been meaning to read.

Plant a garden.

Take a five-minute mind vacation. Think of the most peaceful place you've ever been to, then close your eyes and go there. Is it the beach at sunset? The Grand Canyon at dawn? You decide.

Pray or meditate regularly. In your mind, count all the people and things in your life for which you are thankful. This will put your job search (and your life) in perspective.
